A Brief History
How do you sum up the rich and eventful history of a church family like Wellspring Church in a few paragraphs? Well, here you go!
The church's history extends back to 1951 with the establishment of Emmanuel Pentecostal Church (AoG) which had a site in the town centre, which was demolished when the Harlequin Shopping Centre (now intu Watford) was built, and then a chapel building on Sotheron Road.
Watford Community Church was formed when Alan and Eileen Vincent, who had developed a strong network of evangelical charismatic churches under the umbrella of 'West Herts Community Church' were asked to bring new life and leadership to the Emmanuel congregation.
From 1991 the church was meeting on Sundays in the Watford Grammar School for Girls and led by Rachel and Gordon Hickson who in 1998 handed over leadership to Tim and Helen Roberts. In this time our name was changed to Wellspring Church, and at the end of 2010 the church opened the doors of The Wellspring Church Centre, a purpose-built facility constructed in partnership with Watford Borough Council and other agencies with an emphasis on providing training and community facilities for local residents.
In September of 2023 Tim and Helen passed the baton of leadership to David Dodwell, who after growing up within this church family and serving as Kids and Youth Minister and Lead Pastor for several years, took on the role of Senior Minister. We look back with deep gratitude of the race run so far and look foward to what God has for us next!
